A local LMS can be powerful if your organization has IT staff that can administer, customize, support, and scale the software to suit the organization’s needs.

Course Creation Capabilities

Some LMS programs include course-creation tools where an organization can craft custom courses, but these tools are not included in every LMS by default. If your company wants course-creation tools, carefully check the specifications of each LMS you are considering. Some LMS programs offer course-creation tools for an additional charge while other LMS systems do not offer creation tools at all and only distribute course content. The ability to create custom courses may be invaluable for organizations with niche needs, but most organizations will find the existing courses offered by LMS services satisfactory. 

Software as a Service

The alternative option to locally installing an LMS program is to buy the software as a service. The software as a service model lets your organization pay a monthly fee for access to the LMS software. This takes the technical burden off the organization and leaves it with the LMS program vendor; you do not need a dedicated IT team to support a SaaS LMS as upgrades, maintenance, and support are included in the monthly price. Painless scalability and adding or removing hundreds of users is simple with a SaaS LMS.

Canvas is an LMS program designed to increase learner engagement and is popular with academic institutions. Canvas has mobile apps, classroom web conferencing, data reports for instructors and a new feature called Arc. Arc is used to upload and share videos to digital classrooms to increase collaboration between students and their instructors. There is no publicly listed price for Canvas, and you must contact Instructure directly for a quote. 

Cornerstone LMS is a web-based LMS that supports compliance and employee-driven training with customizable learning experiences. Cornerstone also features built-in course creation and authorship tools, gamification, video conferencing, and mobile versions. There is no publicly listed price for Cornerstone, and you must contact Cornerstone OnDemand to receive a quote.
